District of New England

Previous to the year 1852 no sheep of the Cheviot breed were introduced into the flocks of New South Wales, they are a low set hardy sheep.   The wool is good, and they have a close staple of wool upon them.

The oldest stockholders of sheep prefer the long staple, sound in fibre, fine and close on the back of the animal, this they consider a wool best suited for the London Market.

The cold climate of New England produces a more sound & valuable wool than that produced in the hot climates of Liverpool Plains, Darling or Burnett districts, & it is a matter of remark that the coarsest breed of Leicester sheep run fine after a few years grazing in New England.

Well breed, & fine wooled colonial rams were sold in New England during the year 1852 at from twenty to thirty shillings a head.

The colonists look to New England for a supply of strong valuable clip of wools for the English market, and from the attention paid by the flock masters of this district, to the improvement of their flocks, and runs, they may not be disappointed.
