SHEEP FARMING REDUCED TO A BUSINESS -

During the early introduction of sheep farming in New South Wales, large prices were obtained for flocks of sheep & wool was sold for upwards of three Shillings a pound, during these years there was an abundant supply of labour, & the grazing lands were taken up with avidity - The great demand for stock of this description, encouraged the farmers to be careful in their management of their flocks, These they entrusted to their [asigned] servants, the expense attending these was to the flockmaster, being a stated supply of clothing & food.  At that time a flock of sheep was considered large counting out Seven hundred.
At present the flocks are run in eleven & twelve hundred, and in flocks of two thousand.  During the year 1850 the wage of a Shepherd in the interior was from £20 to £25 per annum, & that of a watchman £18. the flockmaster calculated at this time, that by selling his wool in Sydney at one shilling per pound, that he would Clear the expenses of his station, & that he would be at no loss provided his station were properly conducted - Those sheep farmers who were [indecipherable} at this time were compelled to reduce their business to a system and every department of a large establishment was Conducted to a [indecipherable], first from the Condition the Shepherd had his Sheep in, to throughout the whole of the operation of washing, shearing, securing the fleeces, by conditioning the wool well & by aporting and preparing for the bales, by packing the bales, and even to the carriage of the wool from the interior to the Sea Coast.
A good Shepherd is a valuable man to a flockmaster, his employment is a solitary one in the bush, commencing from one hour after sun rise in the morning and only ending at Sun down, he has to account for all lost sheep from his flock, to pay for them if he has lost any, & to give
satisfactory proof of any deaths, Sunday & Saturday are alike to him, he has to follow his flock in winter's rain, & Summers heat, his employment is also attended with risk, he must have his flock in good condition, he must have experience in the bush, the flaskmasters require men who know
