From Mr Morts           Produce Circular

Of about 6000 casks, which have [passed] under the hammer, the bulk has been sold at prices ranging from 26p to 29p, very little fetching as high as 30p. The frustrations in price have been great, caused partially by the alterations of price from time to time in the English Market, but principally by the rates of exchange by freights in the Colony.
The export list shows 19, 914 casks against 9,196 shoppers this year before,  if the larger consumptions of 1851 & 2 over previous years, in the manufacture of Soap & Candles, be taken into account & the tallow which for want on conveyance has been detained along the Coast, we shall find that the yield of the past year has not been far short of 10,000 tons of which about one fourth has been [Milton]. The number of Cattle & Sheep boiled to give the yield may be estimated at 120, 000 of the former & 300,000 of the latter. That we shall ever reach this yield again or anything approaching it is neither probable nor desirable. The increasing demand upon our store stock has entirely checked boiling to the southward and
