DARLING DISTRICT

THE CONDOMINE RIVER

This river was first seen by Mr Cunningham during his overland expedition to Moreton Bay and named by him in [indecipherable] to    Condamine - This river is an extra branch of the Balonne flowing from the great northern range  The [indecipherable] river joins this river where it is named Lower Condamine - During the early settlement on this river the Blacks who had visited the lowest stations informed the whites that 'White fellow sit down there" and pointing
the South West said "Sit down not far away" and that " Bullock belonging to white fellow sit down there up bail far away"  They alluded to the Western Stations formed on the [indecipherable] & lower part of the Belonne and [indecipherable] rivers.  The [indecipherable] river [indecipherable] is at this time all taken up & occupied as Cattle & Sheep Country  Consequently the early interest taken by the Settlers in this information communicated by the blacks is now gone.  Thus we have quietly taken possession of an extensive district, the Blacks being in the way inconvenienced by us & about the stations they have tasted what is to them the delicious fare of the Whites, and of the Golden leaf [indecipherable] they are now contented to smoke the Calm[?] of peace & to leave off their old practice of spearing horses and Cattle.

COAL, LIMESTONE, GRANITE

Coal of a good quality is found in on [indecipherable] on Gap creek, by the creek the main road from Warwick runs to the range & over Cunninghams gap to Brisbane, this gap is named Cunninghams he [indecipherable] first [indecipherable] over it on his expedition to Moreton Bay. In various other localities Coal has since been found, Limestone is likewise found in the district.

THE WARILLA TREE, FRUIT OF THE WARILLA.

This tree grows to perfection on Darling downs and produces a fruit similar to the Peach. The leaves of this tree are like the leaves of the lime tree having a beautiful fresh green colour On Darling Downs and on the ranges of Mountains the Warilla grows to the height of an English apple tree

The blacks name the tree the "Budgery Warilla" - The good Warilla -
The fruit of the Warilla is ripe about [Christmass], and at this season, the tracks of the blacks & the remains of their fires are frequently met with in the bush & to the mountains where these trees are the most abundant -  The tribes from a Considerable distance visit those blacks in the district during the fruit season - I found this tree as far south as the Source of the Severn river in New England - The tree is there [ indecipherable ] & produces no fruit -
