OCCUPATION OF COUNTRY AS A SHEEP AND CATTLE RUN
 
The extent of Country occupied by Flockmasters whose Stations are Situated on hill and range Country, is for every twelve thousand sheep that forty thousand acres be the extent of the run, or Say at the rate of three and a quarter acres for each sheep grazing on the Station. - At present Country is claimed by Flockmasters to a much greater extent; under the plea of increase for their stock, Some settlers modestly occupying only ten miles by twelve miles, Another claiming 18 by 20 as a Sheep & Cattle run [indecipherable] others Claiming as their right for a Sheep & Cattle run twenty five miles one way, by thirty miles another this of Course,is much to the annoyance of their neighbours who were unfortunate in occupying their run subsequent to the large holder - The early occupiers of new Country in former years,  grasping not only the best of the Country, but the most of it. More in fact, than they possibly can occupy, even after twenty years of peaceful possession - the head Station of every Sheep Establishment, is generally understood to be placed as near as possible in the centre of  the run, the out  Sheep Stations are in Some Cases ten miles from the head Station, a startling nuisance is in the first place, to supply these weekly with rations, & even then the run not half occupied.
 
DESCRIPTION OF ONE OF THE RUNS FOR SALE

ON FRIDAY 17th MARCH 1854 BY MORT ST

 

ERMINGTON RUN  Which commences within nine miles of South Grafton, Clarence River & runs in a westerly direction about sixty one miles to
to Moana River, where it joins the Glen Elgin run, which extends over the Table land of New England, to within about ten miles of Dundee -The two runs Combined thus occupying a track of country ninety one miles long by average width of twenty miles and capable of depasturing nine thousand head of Cattle & twenty five thousand of sheep."
"From Ermington to the South arm of the Clarence River is fourteen miles, thus part of the run is held under an eight years lease, it forms a compact Station of itself & will hold about 2000 head of Cattle - This will form a splendid breeding Station, being situated between two arms of the Clarence. It is also well adapted for a heifer Station, or for a Select herd, being well planned with natural boundaries'
