CLARENCE DISTRICT.
FREESTONE COAL AND LIMESTONE.
Freestone & Coal has been found in this district, no quarries are opened of Freestone nor pits of Coal at present, the Settlers find no inducement to open these, the Steam Vessels plying to Grafton will induce the Settlers to Search for Coal in the neighbourhood of Grafton. Limestone has been found in Various parts of this district
BLACK BUSTARD OR BUSH TURKEY. SCRUB TURKEY
In this district, the Colour of the bush turkey in the Nambuckra or Sea Coast Country is black
MANNA
There is a greater abundance of this gum procured from under the trees, than in New England or in the low Countries Situated in the West, the pieces are of a much larger Size.
KANGAROO & WALLABY.
Immense Numbers of these Animals are Seen on the Cattle runs of this district, on these runs they are undisturbed, their numbers diminish Slowly, few Sheep Stations being in the district
THE FLYING SQUIRREL & FOX
The small grey flying Squirrel is here found in greater abundance than in the interior, and an animal named by the Colonists the flying fox, which is about the Size of a barn door fowl.
FISH FOUND IN THE RIVERS
The whole of the rivers in this district, abound with fish of every description found on the east Coast of New South Wales. The Nambuckra & Bellejum rivers are justly noted for the Variety and Numbers of the finest fish Caught Caught on the Eastern Coast of Australia
MARBLE FOUND ON THE MARIA RIVER
Marble of Various Colours has been found on this river which is divided from Clarence district by the Macleay river, Some beautiful Samples of white Marble have been obtained from the Abercrombie Caves in New South Wales, although Coloured Marbles are to be found in abundance throughout this Colony, yet the White Marble has been Considered as a product of very great Variety.
WHITE MARBLE FROM THE ABERCROMBIE CAVES
The Country in the immediate neighbourhood of the Caves abounds in this beautiful Stone the Caves themselves are walled in by Millions of tons of it — Whether at Some future time the town of Bathurst may not be adorned by the Marble from the Abercrombie Quarries is a Matter too Much to the future for present decision.
