COAL FOUND IN MORETON

The mineral Survey of this district exhibits vast coal deposits, these are described as being very rich & extensively defused. The coal trade of the Northern District will undoubtedly increase when parties who have skill Capital & energy employ these in the working of the extensive mines. These would supply for ages all that could possibly be demanded of them either for home Consumpt of for export this is provided the works be carried out upon well regulated principles for the economic Value of the Coal & for the public good at present Coal is imperfectly & wastefully worked. Much of the available lands for water Carriage where Coal crops out are already purchased and should the works be proceeded with & carried out on well regulated principles the individuals engaged will be enriched by this Valuable Product & add considerably to the resources of the district
 
STEAM & COASTING SAILING VESSELS.

Steam & Sailing Vessels ply betwixt Sydney, Newcastle & the Various ports of this district with the produce from, & Supplies to this district, also that of Darling & Lower Condamine This district has had a large share of the Coasting trade of Vessels belonging to Australia. Which is yearly increasing Brisbane the principal Sea port enjoys a large Share of this
PEARL FISHING AT MORETON BAY. 1854 -

This business is at present engaging the attention of the Colonists in Moreton district Several boat parties are engaged at present - The pearls got are Said to be small but sufficient in value to pay. The diving bell ought to be employed in this business, when no doubt a very different result would attend the exertions of a Company, or Companies, formed in Sydney or in Morton District.
 
PEARL FISHERY IN THE ISLAND OF CEYLON

The animal that produces pearls in the greatest abundance, of the purest nature, & the highest value, was by Linnaeus Classed with the muscles, but some other naturalists have formed it into a distinct genus. It inhabits the Persian Gulf, the coasts of Ceylon, the Australian Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, & the Coast of Japan. It attains perfection nowhere but in the equatorial seas, but the pearl fishery in the Island of Ceylon is the most Celebrated & Productive, it is on the west coast, off the bay of Condatahy, where the country is very sandy & nearly without inhabitants, but during the fishing Season a populous town, with many streets a mile long, appears to have suddenly started up. The oyster beds or banks extend over a space of thirty miles long by twenty four broad - The twentieth of February is generally the day of rendezvous for the fishermen.
