STILL THEY COME

The following statement of the arrival of vessels., passengers &c. in the port of Melbourne during the month of May may prove interesting.
From London there arrived 20 vessels, of an aggregate tonnage of 9225 tons, conveying 1812 souls.  From Liverpool, 13  vessels tonnage 8146 passengers 2416.

From Scotland 7 vessels tonnage 2336 - passengers 464.
From other ports in England 3 vessels tonnage 912 passengers 385 -
From the United States of America 17 vessels tonnage 7678 passengers 412.
From the Cape of Good Hope 2 vessels tonnage 219. passengers 29.
From India 5 vessels Tonnage 2831 passengers 236.
From the Mauritius 2 vessels: tonnage 426. passengers 92
From Sydney 36 vessels tonnage 11.298. Passengers

From Van diemens Land 49 vessels tonnage 8674. Passengers 757.
From Adelaide 22 vessels tonnage 4868, passengers 414.

During th previous seven months no less than 1125 vessels had entered Melbourne harbour & port bringing 63.480 passengers -

ENORMOUS  GOLD  FIELD    30th  AUG.  1853.

Yesterday, His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor received a dispatch from the Commissioner at Balaarat [Ballarat] announcing the discovery of an enormous gold
field, Considerably greater than any previously discovered throughout the world -
The dispatch says that two parties, of three men each, have sunk two holes near the Canadian gully, from which they had in lumps extracted 900 & 700 ounces of the precious metal, and that when the dispatch was written they had Come upon " a regular table of gold".
