MORETON DISTRICT

THE ROSEWOOD TREE & WOOD FIT FOR VENEERING IN THIS DISTRICT

The Rosewood or Rhodium tree is found in this district. This tree obtains this name from the fragrance the saw dust and chips emit on being newly cut down, & from the odoriferous essential oil obtained by boiling the chips and bark

This wood has been long used for veneering and has of late years become an export from South America & from the Canary Islands to Britain. I have never been able to learn whether any attempts has been made to export this wood from Moreton district; The quantities of exportable wood of the Rosewood in this district, & particularly in Clarence where in the Nambucken or Sea Coast country it is most abundant. may in future years engage the attention of some enterprising individuals. Rosewood trees grow near to the head of navigation on Brisbane river Consequently little land carriage would be required. Brisbane is now declared a free port this may induce shippers not only to export this timber but also Forest Oak, like Spotted gum tree, the Box, & the Apple, of which there is an abundance in the district. the grain of these woods are beautifully varigated in many instances [indecipherable] as well as Rosewood for Veneer work, and are used in England for that purpose

Several fine trees of Rosewood have been cut on the Bulga range of mountains within forty miles of Maitland on Hunter River

Cedar has long been an export from Moreton Bay to the Sydney market the best cedar has been sent from this district
