DIRECT SHIPMENT OF WOOLS TO FRANCE

SYDNEY MARCH 23RD 1855

The French registered bark Siam is on the eve of Sailing hence for France, with a full cargo of Australian produce, including 1511 bales of wool of our Superior Clips, Carefully selected by M Nouffard for the French Market, these wools are highly approved by the manufacturers of France, the colonists have a favourable promise of a very extensive wool trade with France.
IN 1851 France bought 46,000 bales of Colonial wool in the London Market, and now with the late remission by the Emperor of the French of 12 per cent. in the duty on direct Shipments from the wool growing countries there can be no question as to the rapid extension in the direction of France of this most important branch of this Colonies [Colony's] resources.    La Juste was the first French wool ship that left for France during our present wool season:  The Siam is  now following; and there at present in the harbour LaMathilde, belonging to Messrs Degrand, Pere and Fils loading for Harvre: & La Brune, by M Nuffard for Rouen.

CLASSIFICATION OF WOOL

WOOL AND HOW TO SHEAR IT OCTOBER 22ND 1853

"At the present time when wool growers are complaining about high wages and great outlay,
it may not be amiss to make, a few remarks on what is lost or rather what is thrown away by bad management. In parts of this country the wool is shorn before the Yoke has time to rise, & it is then packed without Classification, hence great loss to the grower. It is bad enough when the different qualities of the Clothing wools are packed together, but when mixed with combing the loss is greater than would be credited by a person not acquainted with the trade.  The manufacturer who requires the one sort cannot use a pound of the other, and of course has to resell at a credit the { to him useless} wool which he has paid cash.
Wools are so placed for a London sale that a small sample only can be drawn from the end of a bale, & I have often seen that sample vary from 3d. to one Shilling per lb. It is then impossible for a buyer to know what the bulk of the bale will turn out, and the sale is a lottery.  A gentleman who is superintendant [superintendent] of an extensive establishment told  me the other day that the expenses on the wool were so great, without paying for classification.
