MELBOURNE GOLD CIRCULAR

BY EDWARD KNELL ESQ.  JUNE 4TH 1855.

The price of gold remains at 7/-   One month has now elapsed since the duty on the shipment of gold came into operation,  at the commencement of which export duty we were informed that every facility would be given for the measuring and weighing of gold at the Treasury.
Exercising a large amount of patience for promised arrangements to be made after the duty came into operation we are, up to this day without the necessary accommodation for the "receiving and examining" of gold at the Treasury  -  The gentlemen there are profuse in their promises, but when it comes to actual delivery, neither time nor opportunity is granted to do justice to the important business, as our last week's experience has unfortunately proved.  The defects in the gold department are want of room and the requisite implements to examine, sift, and weigh each small parcel as received, and second, the monstrous absurdity of being compelled to receive an export daily from [3]  for every such parcel, -  whereas one entry for every collection of say 500 ounces would be sufficient.  We observe a decided improvement as to punctuality in the Customs House officers, for the weighing ( we believe there were six),  only two customs seals are provided?
