PROGRESS OF THE VICTORIAN GOLD FIELDS.
31 DECEMBER 1854
Grand total of production since August 1857.

According to the statements of Messrs. Westgarth and Khull the grand total of production since August 1851 till this date has been Nine Million Seven hundred & fifty four thousand and seventy seven ounces of Gold.  9.754. 077 ounces which, at Four pounds per ounce would be worth £38:016:308  ---
Say  Thirty Eight Million Sixteen thousand three hundred & eight pounds sterling.

FISH FROM THE MURRAY, DIGGERS SUPPLIED WITH FISH

The Murray abounds in splendid fish of the cod & Brim species, weighing from an ounce to a hundred weight, and some pushing parties on the gold field having joined with others on the
Murray the diggers are now weekly supplied with
Capital fish  -   The great difficulty was the preservation of the fish in a fresh state for several days, in such a hot climate, but this has been alleviated by inserting  strong hook in the jaw of the fish, secured by a stout cord and allowing it to swim about till required.  They are then taken out of the river every Friday afternoon, and brought to the Bendigo Market on Saturday Morning, when they are sold at three shillings per pound.

IMMIGRATION 31ST DECEMBER 1854

Another tide of immigration seems setting in.
In the course of last week upwards of three thousand people landed on our Shores in quest of a home.  England has not yet become so comfortable to the working man as to obviate the desire of leaving it for a more auspicious field of labour, and it would appear that Victoria has not altogether lost her attractions to independent emigrants.
