 In a [number?] of the Sydney Morning Herald for April 1850 the Editor asks the question: Can any  one of our readers inform us whether there were any Public Sales of Australian Wool prior to 1820.
The Shipment of Wool from Australia commenced in 1807 when the late Captn Macarthur sent home 247 lbs  -  the quantities of Australian wool imported into England during the first thirteen years of its growth in the Colony, was as follows 1807, 247 lbs, 1808 [indecipherable] 1811 167 lbs;1815 32,971 lbs; 1816 73,161 lbs; 1817 13,616 lbs; 1818 86,525 lbs; 1819, 74,287 lbs; 1820, 90,415 lbs, Was this all sold by private contract price. 1820 - The quantity of wool sent home in 1819 was only abut two hundred & fifty bales, & it might not have been Considered advisable to have a public sale for a big quantity.
 

AUSTRALIAN & GERMAN WOOL
SHIPPED TO ENGLAND IN 1840

In 1840 Germany sent to England more than twice as much wool as all the Australian Colonies. In 1848 The Australian Colonies sent to England twice as much wool as Germany.
 
SPANISH WOOL SHIPPED TO ENGLAND IN 1840 & 1848
 
In 1840 Spain Sent to England 5,979 Packs. In 1848 Spain sent to England only 356 Packs and is therefore nearly driven out of the market.
 
IMPORT OF FOREIGN & AUSTRALIAN WOOL 1840 & 1848.
 
The total import of all foreign wool in 1848 was 83,000 Packs more than 1840 ---- The increase is made up by the Australian Colonies they having sent in
1840------------------------------40,500 Packs
and in 1848--------------------120 - 000  " being an actual increase of 87,500 Packs.
