VICTORIA
Gold Mining commenced in Victoria in September 1851 and during this month, there had [?] from the first of the Gold fields at Balarat [Ballarat] one hundred & twenty one ounces of gold.
In the month of October there were seven thousand diggers at Balarat [Ballarat]
On the 1st of April 1852 there were fifty thousand people assembled at Mount Alexander who were principally engaged in gold digging this field was then considered the richest gold field hitherto known in the world - The repute of these gold fields caused an extrordinary [extraordinary] influx of people from the adjacent Colonies Computed to have averaged during the period of the early discovery of gold of from 6000 to 8,000 persons per month.
On the 1st of April 1852 the population of Victoria was Computed to be one hundred & fifteen thousand persons.
