DISTRICT OF NEW ENGLAND.

PRICES OF WHEAT, FLOUR ETC. IN NEW ENGLAND & SYDNEY BEFORE & AFTER THE GOLD DISCOVERY.

During the early Settlement of the District of New England the Sheep farmers were compelled to convey the whole of their Stores for the Supply of their Stations from Sydney or from Maitland on Hunter River. The important article of flour which during the years 1836 to 1839 was at a high figure in Sydney, and Maitland, Considerably increased the expenditure of the early Settlers of the District. During these years few Sheep farmers in the Northern part of the district had found leisure to fence in ground for Cultivation for the use of their Stations.         In 1838 the Settlers on Beardy plains (now a rich agricultural district) Calculated upon the expense of a ton of flour from Sydney delivered on their Stations at one hundred pounds.  In 1843 the Settlers of New England were in a position to Supply themselves with wheat from their own Stations, and this year Wheat was Sent from this district to their Stations on Liverpool plains, as also by the return drays to the Hunter river district.

Wheat was Sold in New England during the years 1844, to 1849, at from three Shillings & Six pence, to five Shillings per bushel.

In 1849 flour was Sold in Armadale at Eleven pounds per ton.

In 1851 there were two thousand one hundred & twenty Seven acres of wheat under Cultivation in the district of New England, the produce was 51.878 bushels and averaging twenty four and a half bushels to the acre.

During 1855 owing to the deficient crop of 1854, flour was at a high figure in Armadale & in June fetched £78 per ton and wheat 35/. per bushel

Flour was freely offered at £10 per ton, & even in Some instances at a lower figure. Sugar changed hands for Taal & Zebu at from £14.10/. to £15. and for Brazil at £21 per ton. Launceston & Port fairy wheat Sold at 4/. to 4/2 Colonial wheat 3/9 to 4/. Maize 3/4 to 4/. Vats 2/6. & Barley dull of sale 2/6 to 3/. per bushel. SHEEP AND CATTLE SEPtr.. 1849. The average price for cattle was about 10/6. & for Sheep 12/. per 100lbs on the estimated weight of the animal
