GWYDER DISTRICT.

This country formerly formed part of Liverpool plains district. In 1847 it was formed into a distinct district having a separate Crown land Commissioner & named after the principal Stream which flows through the centre of the country This river was named by Cunningham in Compliment to Lord Gwyder
The runs of the district are justly celebrated for the superior herds of fat Cattle Sent to the Sydney & Victorian Markets. Cattle from this district fetch higher higher prices than any from the most favoured runs in New South Wales, these runs are large, & where they are not over Stocked the Cattle from this Country will bear Comparison with the best sent to any market. Deep & Large Myall & Bucoolo Scrub, border the rivers, and skirt the plains affording Shelter & feed for the Cattle, the fattening qualities of which are well known. This district has been visited with seasons of drought similar to the whole of the country situated to the westwards & these Seasons have been severely felt particularly by those whose runs were overstocked

SHEEP RUNS IN THIS DISTRICT

The returns show a considerable increase of Sheep in this district within a few years, In January 1850 the number of Sheep was one hundred & forty thousand one hundred & eighty five. A practice is now adopted by the flock owners of large establishments in the adjacent range countries, of forming fattening stations for their wethers in this country. Good Sheep Stations are formed on the hill & range Country of the Manilla & Horton, much of this district where the ranges terminate is called  the low country which is occupied as Cattle Stations or runs  for fattening Sheep for the different Markets in the Colony.

On the extensive plains in the district of Gwyder during the months of January & February the thermometer in the shade rises as high as 115o. The Stock Keepers on the stations in that part of the district perform what out work is to be done by Sunrise, they remain in the huts during the heat of the day & the Cattle look for Shade in the Myall & Bricelow Shrubs.
