CLARENCE DISTRICT

REGARDING CATTLE STATIONS AND CATTLE

Many settlers form Cattle Stations at convenient distances from their Sheep Stations, Some settlers occupying the same run by Sheep and Cattle this is where the run large and others holding a [seperate] license for each.
Cattle can occupy country which is unfit for sheep runs - The low country is frequently occupied by those settlers who follow cattle grazing, and the hill and mountain by sheep farmers.  Graziers who study to cultivate the breed of their herds of cattle cull out the inferior breed of cows and run bulls of a a superior description into their cattle runs -

FELL MONGERING SKINS IN THE INTERIOR IN  [1868?]
Skins were fell mongered in the interior during the year at two pence each skin or at the rate of three half pence per pound  - The wool was got up in a proper washed and cleaned state and ready to be packed into bales for shipment to England - at these prices the fell
monger supplied himself with rations, two can soak one hundred skins clean off the wool and wash this number one day with another.

STATE OF LABOUR SCARCITY OF SHEPHERDS IN THE INTERIOR DURING [184?]

During this year sheep farmers had numerous applications from men travelling the road requesting employment - The generality of these men to use the Flockmasters words " are not of the sort we want"  Seldom a day passed but applicants were found even at the remote stations in search of employment, and numerous applications were made for jobs at splitting, fencing, at hut building and for thrashing [?]  The scarcity of shepherds might then be accounted for in several ways - first from the increase of flocks in these northern districts  From a great proportion of shepherds becoming free, or having obtained tickets of leave, and from the capability of these men to turn their hand to other work few shepherds wish to remain in that employment while another with less risk is to be had -
