CLARENCE DISTRICT

COUNTRY ADAPTED FOR CATTLE GRAZING

In the Northern Districts the graziers occupy the mountain and range Country for their breeding herds of cattle and the low country they prefer for their gathering herds. The mountain and range country is preferred for breeding herds for this reason, that the cattle do not fatten but keep in proper condition, from the mountain runs the cattle are drafted yearly for the fattening runs.
ln table lands near the great northern dividing range have been found to be good country for breeding cattle - The most noted fattening country is to be found two degrees to the westward of this range in Gwydyr. Still further to the westward in {M...], in the lower Condamine Country on the Fitzroy Downs these are considered excellent fattening countries either for Consumption in the Colonial markets or for the [indecipherable] down establishments altho not all adapted for breeding country

THE MAHOGANY TREE FOR RAILWAYS, WATERWORKS ETC ETC

Of the Productive Resources of the Colony the Mahogany tree is one of value - Mahogany trees are cut in this district also in the county of Macquarie, the grain of the wood is very close and the wood very hard and durable  The wood of this tree has become an export from Western Australia  2000 loads were forwarded in August 1854 to South Australia for railway purposes which realized in Adelaide £11 per load - There can be no doubt of its lasting qualities as even the East India teak is readily devoured by the white ant, which Shuns the Mahogany and also does the teredo navalis and therefore, the Mahogany would be invaluable for railways, waterworks etc etc where its durability and other valuable properties are inestimable  In this district the mahogany tree is found on the Sea Coast and in the interior
