the Importance of the Australian Colony To Britain
Of all the British Colonies or populations next to Australia, the largest is the East Indies; the nature of British produce imported into the East Indies in 1853 from £8.185.00. While the nature of the [can't read] produce imported during the [can't read] into Australia and £14.513.700. Australia exceeding India by upwards of [can't read] millions and a quarter, or seventy eight per cent. Taking the financial British Colonies into the Companies it is shown that the aggregate amount of British produce imported during 1853 by British [can't read]. West Indies, South Africa, & [Mauritius], was only £8.423.700. or less than the amount imported by Australia alone by £6.000.000, ____ Taking these colonies singly it is found that in proportion to each £1000 worth imported by Australia the amount imported by British North America is £[334] or little more than one third. By the British West Indies £133. or less than one seventh: by South Africa £84 or less than one twelfth & by the [Mauritius] £27 or one thirty seventh.

These figures show that more than three fifths of the wool important into the united kingdom is from her own populations, of that the quantity she imports from Australia exceeds considerably the quantity she imports from foreign Countries& is nearly three to one of the quantity she imports from her other populations. The actual quantity imported by her from Australia, during the four years, exceeded the imports from foreign countries by 70.850. [can't read] & from her other populations by 394.813 [can't read].
It will be observed that notwithstanding the [can't read] canvas which have [interface] in those years with the [pastoral] pursuits of Australia there has been a steady [can't read] of export of wool & meat. The quantity imported with the United Kingdom in 1854 exceeded the quantity imported in 1851 by 12.076 [can't read] or upwards of eight per cent.
