MELBOURNE MARKETS JANUARY 27th 1851

Flour has fallen £2. per ton during the last week, owing to the heavy importation from Van diemens land, also from the crops Yielding much better than had been anticipated - Fine flour is now £15 per ton, Seconds £13.10/- per ton. Wheat per bushel five shillings to 5/3d. bran one shilling & four pence per bushel -
 
GOLD CUP PRESENTED TO MR HARGRAVES IN 1853.

 
The cup was presented to Edward Hammond Hargraves Esq by a few of the Colonists of Victoria, in testimony of their high appreciation of this important discovery of gold in Australia 1851 the Cup Contained five hundred sovereigns & is of great beauty - It is set on a pedestal, & is supported with vine all in gold stems.  On the pedestal are nine gold specimens in quartz with Figures of Mr Hargraves and his horse.  Mr Hargraves has just discovered the precious metal & is waving his hat in triumph, The horse is drawing back in fright. - The group is exquisitely finished.  The Cup is a fancy one with handles round which vine leaves of gold are gracefully twined.  The Cup itself is encircled with laurel leaf. It is of burnished gold, & the whole is adorned with chasing [?] of excellent design.
The extreme height of the elegant piece of work including the pedestal in 8½ inches length with the handles 6¾ inches breadth 3½ inches.
the cup was exhibited on the table of the Legislative Council and the attention of the House was directed to it by the Speaker.
