Sunday 10 March [1918]
Summer Time Commenced.
Up at 7. Too misty for patrol till 11.30 when I went off with 5 others. Had a grand scrap with 12 Albatros scouts who attacked us from above. We only had five machines – Symons had dropped out. After a furious scrap we shot one down in flames & five out of control & utterly routed the 12 Huns! I got one down in flames & one out of control. Finished our patrol without seeing another Hun. A most exciting and successful scrap – the squadron's first big fight! Great joy in the camp on our return! Went off with all the flight to dinner in Amiens in celebration of the event. Back about 10.30. We have an offensive patrol of 12 machines tomorrow.
Letter to Mary.
