Sunday 16 June [1918]
Up at 8.30. Flew solo & also passed out in the morning. Rained in afternoon. I have passed at 1A standard but my not having flown a scout disqualifies me for a Wing Examiner's job. Got more home mail. Left Portsmouth by the 5.50. A most uncomfortable trip – 16 in the compartment & the ugliest woman in the world calmly sat on me all the way! Had some dinner at the Grosvenor about 9. Went to Regent Palace & after waiting an hour the family arrived. Had some tea with them & then returned to the Grosvenor.
