Sunday 7 July [1918]
Up at 8. Breakfast & then to take pupils' parade at 9. An awful day in the office taking over the squadron from Major Clarke. Completed the "taking over" about 5 p.m.! Back to office & worked till dinner time. Back again & worked till 10 p.m. So now I am O.C. 8 T.S. – my C.O. having been sent down!! It is a very big proposition and there are countless difficulties ahead. It is a pretty severe job to strike as one's first attempt as O.C. a squadron but I can only try my best.
