Tuesday 13 August [1918]
Up at 7. Down to Port Meadow where I saw for the first time a Handley Page at close quarters. Flew over to Witney to collect my Avro & had breakfast there. Flew back to Oxford at 11 for the conference at the Wing. Down to Port Meadow again after lunch and did dual till 6 p.m. Back to the Wing & found a telegram from Aunty Mary that dear old Bryan was killed in action on the 6th. It is too terrible for words! May he Rest in Peace. Had some dinner & caught the 9.25 to London. Taxi to 5 Marble Arch and found darling Aunty Mary & Mary. The poor old things are wonderfully brave but it is all so heartbreaking.
