Friday 6 September [1918]
Up at 9. Down to Port Meadow with Benson, Smith & Adamson & flew to Rendcomb. Landed at Witney on the way. Did a certain amount of work though the weather was "dud". When I was up after lunch I saw a Bristol Fighter fall at terrific speed & burst into flames on hitting the ground. I've never seen such a crash. Landed near by but there was nothing to be done as the pilot, Thompson, was killed. Flew back to the aerodrome. Smith & I flew back to Oxford before tea. To the Pennington's after dinner.
