Cable to Mother & Father

Wednesday 5 June [1918]
Got up at 9. After breakfast walked to the aerodrome. Took up a Bristol for a while. Borrowed a bicycle & rode down to lunch. In afternoon took up a DH6 – Oh horrors! Also flew a Bristol from the back seat. Colonel Freeman came. I had a talk to him & he was very nice. Later gave some dual in a DH to Chatham but the engine conked. Tomorrow is a holiday – I must try to get a bike so will go to London. Had dinner with Kerrnish & Chatham. Arranged for a car to Oxford to catch the 9.12 tomorrow. It is obvious that this squadron is utterly "dud". Both the C.O. & the Colonel told me there is hard work ahead to pull things straight! It is disheartening but will we will see.
