Sunday 21 April [1918]
Up at 7.30. Fine day & very cold with strong N.E. wind. Went off on O.P. at 9.10 a.m. We were on top of formation this time. Very cold & generally unpleasant. The formation was shockingly bad, & though good individual work was done, it was a wonder we lost no machines. Purdom crashed one EA, Savage & Thompson two, Arinson & Parry got 2 out of control, Whistance & Todd one & Yuill & Collis two doubtful ones. I chased 2 two seaters to Lille but got a jamb & lost them. Ran into 12 Phalz & Albatross but did not attack as my formation was weak & we had been up over 2 hours. Savage ran out of petrol & crashed – Thompson was rather badly hurt. Went up in evening & tested my gun. Played bridge after dinner.
