From: Aunty Mary, Thos. Cook & Son
To: Aunty Mary, Margaret

Thursday 21 February [1918]
Up at 9. Left Ground at 10.30 on Balloon Patrol. Patrolled Ypres-Armentieres. A gloriously clear day. Sighted an Albatross 2-seater over Armentieres. Fired a red light & dived from 13000 to 7000 & got into good position under his tail. Opened with a burst of 50 rounds from under 50 yds. E.A. [enemy aircraft] turned East & as he turned Wells got 100 rounds off at him. He crossed my bow at 30 yds. & the observer was obviously killed or wounded as his gun was pointing aimlessly up. Gave him another 50 rounds & he dived vertically with a stream of smoke coming from the fuselage. I dived after him to 5000 when he went into a spin & crashed just behind the Hun front line. So 'B' Flight have the first Hun! Landed at 1.15. Much joy in the Squadron! James & Hay forced landed near Poperinghe [also spelt Poperinge]. To bed early after dinner.
