Thursday 16 May [1918]
Warm hazy day. Claye & I went up at 10 & patrolled along the line for 3 hours at great height but could'nt see a Hun. In afternoon handed over my beloved machine to Clarke. It is sad to part with such a well tried old war horse! I only hope he has the same luck with it as I had. Poor old Wells was killed on patrol today while flying with Armison who was wounded. Now Claye & I are the sole survivors of the original "B" Flight. Had the few old "originals" to dinner as this is my last night. Of all our old lot the only ones left are Purdom, Chambers, Gibbons, Knights, Swayze, Staton, Gordon, Morrow & Claye! I do feel very keenly having to leave the very finest squadron I've ever been in, but I do it cheerfully if it will only bring happiness to darling old Mother & Father.
