Tuesday 2 April [1918]
Up at 7. Off by the 7.50 from Victoria. Bryan came to see me off which was awfully decent of him. Met Claye at Folkestone & we wandered round till 12.45 when our boat went. Arrived in France about 3.45 & reported to R.T.O. but no orders. Tea at Officers Club & did some shopping. Back to R.T.O. & got orders to go by train early tomorrow morning. A brilliant flash of genius sent me to the R.F.C. Depot! Arranged to get a lift in a car going to Hesdin! Walked to the Hotel Folkestone & had a drink & then dinner at the Criterion. Walked round to the dock & found the car & also a cavalry major who was also "hot-stuffing" a lift. Left about 10 & got to Hesdin at 12. Got a room at the Hotel de France & went to bed very weary.
