Friday 3 May [1918]
Fine at last! Up at 8.30. Off on O.P. at 10.30. Had a most extraordinary continuous series of scraps lasting the whole patrol. Claye & I had no luck though we shot at many Huns & sent a few down but could'nt see their fate. Got our machine badly shot about by three triplanes & had to dive away. My machine laid up for a new set of planes! The others did remarkably well getting 9 Huns crashed & six out of control! Parry was shot through the lungs & killed. Hampton & Lane are missing. Off again at 3.30 on another O.P. My gear wouldn't work so I had to come back. Of those who came home none saw any fighting but Spoonley & Grant both landed at No. 10 & are wounded, and Gibbons & Knights are missing! A very strenuous & tiring day.
