Friday 4 October [1918]
Up at 9. To Port Meadow & tested the Bristol & then spent all the morning working on the engine. After lunch flew to Rendcomb. Took up Watts for test & when demonstrating a difficult forced landing I stalled from a few feet. Turned the machine completely over but neither of us were hurt. The machine was badly smashed but not written off. So my wonderful luck has broken and for the first time for two years I've had a smash! Not a bad record anyway. Day flew me back to the aerodrome & I got a tender back to Oxford for dinner. Played Bridge after.
