Sunday 17 February [1918]
Beautifully fine but freezing hard. Up at 8.30. The squadron did its first patrol along the Balloon line. I went up at 10.50 followed by Francis. Went along the lines from Loos to the coast climbing to 18500 feet. Lost sight of Francis. Crossed the lines south of Armentieres & tested my gun while Claye fired his too. Just going home when we sighted 2 Huns above us over Givenchy. I went at one & chased him to La Bassee where I got into perfect position under his tail & opened fire at about 150 yards. After a burst of 30 rounds my gun stopped – all ammuntition gone!!! Claye only had ½ a drum left so we had to let the Hun dive off East. Missed the surest Hun ever! Landed at 1 p.m. Cleaned my gun in afternoon. Huns over again at night.
