​Sept 30th 1918

Dear Mother,

Your lengthy letter to hand (the date I forget) which I was so pleased to receive.

Letters are not so frequent as they were, expect that is on account of the huns sinking a few more of letter carriers, still once they are lost they are forgotten just the same as letters the late ones cover all the news of the ones which have gone to the bottom.

What do you think of la guerre now?  There is no mistake old Fritz has been getting a lively time since he met us before Villers Brettoneoux [Bretonneux], he thinks there is about fifty divisions of Aussies now for he gets kicked about by us at every corner of the fray.  Palestine our boys are shaking Johnnie up, they have of late been made into cavalry of late, they were issued with swords, and have imsheed their rifles.

The Aussies in Italy were given a great name and by all accounts
