In the trenches
Somewhere in France
August  1st 1916

Dear Yvonne,
I suppose you think it highly time that I wrote as I havent done so for a few weeks now.

Last week we had a bit of a scrape down the line, we helped in the great push, expect we will be in another soon; its time we did advance some, as we have been at a standstill nearly two years. 

France is a snifter place, snifter filies too, but not as good as the Aussies; the country girls a pretty, I know because I've passed all through the country. Out of all the countries (all of them) I've been in you cannot beat our Aussies. I've seen, Egyptians, Greeks, Turks and Belgians, also French in my travel. Two more places I want to go, and that is England (1) & America (2).  There is a rumour flying about that there is to be leave
granted from August 7th I hope so anyhow.

Another rumour (Latrine wire as we call them) is that there is a big peace conference going to be held on August 14th.  It is nearly twelve months since Lone Pine was fought, and when so many of my mates to were killed.
