Egypt still

Dear Mother,
Have not had a letter from you since May 7th, but have had word from Dad and Gin.  Yesterday we had a bit of mail and I was lucky
enough to get seven, two from work, one from Dad one from Doris Anderson, and the rest elsewhere;  also had a post card a few days ago from
Aunt Irene, she said to get to her if possible. We are at present out in the first line of [indecipherable] canal, but not as good as the last place Ferries Post for we are miles away from the water, in fact I would rather be back on the Peninsula, for we had a swim when we felt inclined. How are you all at the Nest, O.K? Sorry to hear of Rover being lost, but you never can trust these "Ladies Dogs" for they'll go anywhere as long as you have something sweet.  Have had some letters from the boys of the fourth battalion, they say they are in support, but expect to go into the firing line very shortly, the trenches they are to take over are pretty safe, for the holders had only two casualties in two months, what else should
a soldier expect? We have had plenty of trench
