February 19th 17.

Dear Mother,
Since writing to you last I have had six muddy days in the trenches but the quietest our battalion has had on this front, we only had six casualties all the time; one reason why we suffered so small a list is that we had very thick fogs, all the boys were out gathering souveniers off dead germans & such like.  Fritzy took a tumble in the afternoon for some of our fellows went to near to his trenches and were soon spotted by the enemy, nevertheless some fine souveniers were gathered.  I've a few but don't know whether I will be allowed to send same.  These little things are so nice too but so many accidents have happened
