We took some patent rifles up with us. After I had gone two hundred up the hills, I rested awhile; after a short spell he took my pack & rifle from me & helped me up for another five hundred yards but he had to take all my gear up at last for I could not manage it; no sooner had I got into the dead end (15 yards from Abdul) I had to go on post & help put wire out, that took about half an hour. When I came off that I was told I could I could have a sleep; about an hour after when I had been trying to get to sleep & was just getting used to the noise when the officer in charge roused at me for taking my harness off; I'll bet all the Abduls in the vicinity heard what he said, not choice either. My pal explained all to him while I put the harness on again.
I did another shift (five hours) & came off & had a sleep in the bottom of the trench until two fellows who had relieved me woke me up by treading on my face & body. They had both bad wounds; one he's right foot blown off & the other was punctured in the stomach.
