June 17th 15.

Dear Mother,

I am writing to you on board the ship, where there is a good lot of [indecipherable] and a pretty good sea. We thought we would be in port a few days (until Friday), but we are going to stop at [censored] till the rest of the troopships come (about a week).  Where I am writing this is about fifteen hours off Milbourn [Melbourne] where we are to drop a couple of Officers.

Did you get my letter with money in? (£3-0-0) the man that I gave it to nearly got left behind, we had to slow down till a launch came up, so he got aboard. Will write when I get to [censored].  Have cut four heads of hair and scored two shillings, also have had a shave with the Gillet. It is rough now so you can excuse this scribble, but it is a snifter pen.

When the "Canteen" opens in the afternoon I collect all the bottles I can find, take them back, and get a couple of pounds of tobacco. This afternoon I took back thirty-five bottles, and got a pound & a half of weed, sold it for two bob
