In the trenches
"Somewhere in France"
July 25th 1916

Dear Mother,
As you see by the above we are in France and still on the face of the earth, so you see I am alive, well and happy.  We have been in and out of the trenches ever since we landed here, and have been in a charge (raid they call it) to the right of Armenteirs [Armentieres]; expect you have heard all about it by this; we took a lot of prisoners in the fray, but through the both flanks retiring we were cut off and had to retire from the captured positions therefore losing some men. Fritzy, Carl and Hans bombarded us for five and a half hours; it was an awful hole as he was using his biggest shells, where I was he went all round but never touched us, every minute he was throwing them I was expecting to be blown up at any minute.  Our boys forgot the germans and went looking for souvenirs; they got hats caps etc galore.
