Dear Dad,
It is quite a long time since you had a letter from me, it is almost a month ago, but you must excuse me for not doing so, as I have been very busy. This is a dry old place, except when it rains which it does very often and wets everything; there is not three days that go by without it rains. Went into Cairo last week and enjoyed myself, and am biting my tongue now, for I was on the list for leave and they forgot me, will go next time if there is any more leave. There is a rumour that we are going away from this place soon. Another rumour going round is that we are to be split up into another battalion; still another rumour is that the first brigade up to the sixth reinforcements are going back to Australia. I have a lot more letters to write so you will have to excuse me for this one pager, and if I write to all at home it will be as stale a pale ale when the cork is off.
