beans [?], and knocked a couple of guns out with her broadsides.
I think we will be off here shortly, as I heard it from a good & reliable man; & I have just been told that there is a rumour to the same effect; I knew all along that we would be off here before January 14th, as the winter is at it's worst then (between 14th & 28th). We have been getting better food this last day or two, but no fresh meat, & no bread; we get an issue of rum every day now (two tablespoons full) so I put it in my tea; cheese, cocoa, porridge, & I beleive butter we are to get. I would like some bergos [?] now, with plenty of milk & sugar, & I would like to have my toast & tea too. My word we are funny when you come to look through things, we went on a snow fatigue to try and get water; of course we went after it had thawed away. I will write to Auntie Eve; have been asking for her address in my letter, but will write this week. Rupert must be well on his way by now; I hope he is in time for the plum pudding. Well Mother this will have to do Dad as well for it it [is] too cold to write much now, but will write to you at all costs; Lady Jane I suppose will want one so I will write to-day also. The sun is out but it is cold all the same. Well I shall end these pencil marks now, so please accept my best love to you all. Did not get parcel that Dad sent. Expect it next time.
I remain
Your affectionate Son
Rex.
