16th Brigade H. Q.
Fovant Camp
Salisbury
July 5th 17.

Dear Dad

You had good luck last week for I did not send any letters to you or Yvonne, so the mails on board the Mongolia did not get drowned. These underwater armed fish are still sinking our iron-clads, but they are gradually being beaten, especially when these Yanks have a good means of destroying them. If this little island where all the ships are made could only get some of our wheat over they would never fear starvation; we read where the grain is rotting away and the mice destroying it; they should have had these elevators ages ago, they always keep on wrangling until something like that happens the same as the bridge, & the air raid on London; they have been talking about the last raid ever since it happened; when another raid has come & gone I suppose they will do something they could have done at first; anyhow it will make them buck up some & do something.
