17th Feby 1824.
My dear father,
The enclosed copy of a letter from the Col Secy of this day's date will show you the unsuccessful termination of my negotiation. I shall make no further comments upon it than you will find in the Notes annexed but briefly state what has passes today.
I breakfasted with Ovens who went to the Governor afterwards & I believe did his best. Fennell was also down & helped - About eleven oclock I waited upon His Excellency, according to desire. He received me with more than his usual kindness of manner; and then asked for the letter saying that he would rather take it into the Secretary's office himself and repeating all the fine promises of former conversations.
