TRANSLATION.
AT SEA. 21st. September. 1914.
Mr dear Colonel,
I have just received the collection of stamps which you kindly sent me and hasten to thank you for them, also for your kindness in acceding to my request. I hope that you continue without difficulties your administration of the possessions of New Guinea. I should have been very pleased to pay you another visit there, but I have just received orders to go far away from the waters of the Pacific, which leaves me no hope of shaking hands with you. I have, however, a very agreeable souvenir of my too short a friendship with you. Please accept,my dear Colonel, with my best wishes for your health and prosperity, the expression of my esteem.
Signed: A. HUGUET.
Contre Amiral.
To COLONEL HOLMES,
ADMINISTRATOR at RABAUL.
