Letter from L.Bruce
Wrote Home

Stratford on Avon
On Washing up &  Potatoe Peeling today. J.[Dowds?] went on leave this morning. I did not think the commandant would give me leave to go to Stratford on Avon,  so I went without a pass. It is about 23 miles, I left Winchcombe about 11.45 AM & changed at Honeybourne & arrived at Stratford about 1 PM. I visited Ann Hathaway's Cottage  about a mile out of Stratford & I went through Shakespeare's house & the Old Church where where Shakespeare & Ann Hathaway his wife is buried also 3 of his descendents. The Church is very nice, & the Old houses are very interesting [and?] some dating back 500 years. Shakespeare died in the year 1616 & his wife 1623. It is very pretty around this part of the Country & I would have liked to stay longer, it was too bad having to leave at 3.20 PM. It has been fine all day & the trip well worth risking 3 days C.B. Got home abut 6.45 PM.
