[May 3, 1918]

3 letters from Pinnock
2 from home one from Frank

The day was started well by me having to go out on the lines after midnight & at 2 AM our fellows put over a barrage, I think it was in conjunction with the French troops who are attacking on our left, shortly after we saw Fritz send up an S.O.S Signal & his guns opened up, my mate & me were about 100 yards backĀ  from the Front line in a little shell hole & we dare not move shells were falling about 40 yards in front & behind, some came nearer but we never received a scratch, really it was a very exciting time, after he got a little quiet we went back to the front line Coy Sig dugout to see if the lines were broken & to my surprise they were O.K, so we made back to Bn H.Q. My throat & eyes are very sore with the gas infact I can only speak. A fellow told me that I look broken up but it must be the life. Alright through the day.
