[May 4, 1918]

I was laid down in the cellar & about 1 AM I was called to lay a new line from the new position A. Coy had taken up, we thought one reel of wire would do but took two reels & to our surprise we had to come back to H.Q for the third & to my surprise we were 20 yards short still, but we met two mates with a reel of wire & we got communications through. It was raining & a few bullets came very near in our misery we got told that Sgt Woolf had been killed. We had not a very busy day after breakfast except looking through a few houses to see what i could find. Our relief came up about 7. PM & we showed the linesmen were the lines were, but about 10 PM we we had to go along the lines after a break, left about 11 PM & had to find our way back to our new position which was a miserable job.
