[April 5, 1918]

¼ loaf bread

About 3 AM Fritz put some shells over here & kept it going till about 8 AM, he put them all around & never touched our billet. Some of our boys let the horses in the horse line go & shortly after a shell dropped right in the lines & killed the only horse that was left, that shell was only about 40 yards from our billet. Another shell dropped about 50 yards on the other side of us & got 4 horses its an awful sight. We saw were he put a shell right into a house, infact he put them all over. Its pityful to see the woman clearing out around here, some German prisoners brought back to Nouin [possibly Couin]. There seemed to be shelling in the front line this afternoon. We are adviced to get out of the big shead we are in because it is too big a target. More rain today. We went into a bit shed & slept with some Tommies of the 37th Div which hopped over this morning. Very quiet this evening, plenty of mud here yet.

Got paid 40 Franc.
