My Dear Nell,
Just as I sat down to write you a few lines the alarm of mail-oh was given and of course we all rushed it.  I received two- one from Vera Duval and one from Mr Dodwell, Xmas cards only, but even they are a "Godsend" here.  Arthur received a parcel from Mum socks, mitts etc.  He is the first to hear from her at all.  Poor old MacDonald has not had a single letter from his wife yet, so I suppose I cannot growl.  All of our company, which is about two hundred and fifty strong, has been out on the range doing musketry this week and your champion trumpet blower, can still blower by saying he came out top of the whole company, I got about enough points to pass for a sniper.  I give you a list of the points at the end of the letter so Dad can form his own opinion
